Impurities in the RSA clay (as retained on the mesh illustrated), together with poor control systems were resulting in clay items being relegated to rejects even before the firing process.

The recycled clay contained not only the debris from the original clay, but a variety of other faults including air pockets which usually result in broken and cracked products from the biscuit and glaze kilns.
